Media Awards

The Bench

This clip used elements of mise en scene quite well. The costumes were appropriate to the context of the scene as the actors were wearing hoodies which would be stereotypical of a teenage gang. One of the main characters was wearing a suit which showed the authority he had. The main prop used was a cigarette which the actors were smoking creating a realistic sense of what their everyday life is about. There was a tracking shot used when we saw the boy riding the bike which gave us an idea of how fast he was riding and showed us his point of view. There was high key lighting in most of the clip so everything was clearly seen and seemed realistic. The make-up was used to create blood when one of the characters was beaten up, this showed the seriousness of what was going on. Non-diegetic sound was used which was the music that became more tense as the scene got more serious. There was also a voice over which was a character who was saying something about himself which portrays the fact that he played an important role in the film, this created enigma code as we wanted to find out more about this person who was speaking. The editing showed straight cuts which kept going back and forth showing what the characters were doing individually which was continuity editing as each shot made sense in the order that was shown.

WWW: The films that were shown were all very well made, the concepts were also well thought of and they all used techniques of mise en scene, cinematography and sound.

EBI: If they used more ways of including sound.

Institution:TV channels- ITV

ITV is one of the five main national channels. The types of programmes that would normally appear on this channel are family orientated which are also part of  the entertainment genre; programmes such as ‘XFactor’ or ‘The Jonathan Ross show’. ITV is also very low brow.
Typical audience members for ITV would be young teenagers to adults, both male and female who would come from average working class to lower middle class families.
The main aims for the television channel would be to entertain which fits into another intention which is to appeal to youth, so these aims complement each other. Advertising revenue is an important objective as advertisements fund the channel.

·         The international aspect was covered well

·         Well researched and taught in detail

EBI:

·         If we used images/logos

·         If we had a plenary to make sure people understood and learnt what they needed to know

·         If we used an activity to make the lesson more interesting

Film extract-Lighting

Great Gatsby extract

In this extract of the Great Gatsby key lighting is used the whole time which is the brightest and connotes happiness and something joyous going on in the scene. There was also a filler light used which helped soften out the other lights in the scene like in the background, the back light was also used so the whole shot had even lighting around the actors which counteracted the effects of the key light. High-key lighting was used throughout the scene which showed there was a cheerful event going on in the scene as there was no low-key lighting. Top lighting was one of the main techniques used as it makes the film stars standout and look more glamorous which was clearly shown in the scene as everyone was dressed up.

Still image-Lighting

This is a still image taken from ‘The Godfather’. In this image we can see a man wearing a formal suit sitting in an arm chair with his arms flat on the arm rests. This is shown with top lighting which makes certain features stand out; as the actors face is more lit up, however we can still see some dark areas such as his eyes which creates a shadowy effect. Low-key lighting is used which creates a shady, dim effect in the background. There could be a filler light being used which does soften the image, as we can see a glow of light from the hands and face of the actor. As his face it lit up, this connotes importance and authority, also by the way he is sitting. The background is all black and dark which connotes it is not important and the only thing important in the image is the actor.

Extract from Citizen Kane

Introduction Citizen Kane

The establishing shot is the close up of a ‘No trespassing’ sign, this portrays enigma code as it leaves the audience in suspense to why there is no trespassing allowed. The camera then slowly moves upwards which also creates enigma code. There is also a long shot after this which shows the silhouette of a castle in the far background which connotes darkness and evil. A medium shot is used which showed a window of the castle that blacked out as if the lights went out and then turned back on again. This tells us there is somebody in that room, however we want to find out who it is. The actor in that scene is holding a snow globe which was first shown zoomed into (extreme close up) then the camera zoomed out of it showing what it was. This tells us it has some significance to the narrative. There was a low angle shot used when the snow globe has fallen out of the man’s hand and rolls downwards and then cracks on the camera screen. The woman’s reflection is then seen in the broken glass which is a way cinematography creates affect as the scenes are shown in different ways. A medium/close up was used to show the man had died because the woman was covering his face and this showed clearly what was going on. The last bit of the scene shows low key lighting as it dims away to show the scene is over.
The cinematography helps create meaning because the way the camera moves could show someone's point of view and how the actor is viewing things in the scene.
